Have you tried Gamsol, made by Gamblin? I personally react to turpenoid, but have no issues at all with Gamsol. I’ve been using it for 7 or so years with no problem (I’m a full time oil painter). Gamblin has really good information about oil painting, solvents, and mediums on their website. I'll start by saying that there is a type of person that I find irritating in any sort of activity, and that is "captain supplies". You know, the person who must buy every concievable tool and related item before begining whatever it is they intend to do.
Genesis Paints have been around since the 1980's and are gaining popularity with folks like me who've found that even with Turpenoid, Mineral Spirits, and even Water-soluble Oils, the allergies (even using Nox-Out, which I recommended earlier in this discussion thread) cause such headaches and rashes that continued use became really unhealthy. I have never used it as a varnish, so I stick with Damar. Because traditional natural resin varnishes need to be made with genuine pure gum spirits of turpentine, people who are allergic to turpentine should use the pre-made synthetic varnishes. Natural resin crystals are not soluble in petroleum based thinners like Gamsol or Turpenoid. Blending can also be done with other solvents such as Gamsol or Turpenoid (melts the CP and spreads it out a bit to fill in the paper tooth). These can be applied with a paint brush, Q-tip, or make-up sponge. They do not burnish and you can apply more color on top as the paper tooth is not affected. If you want to try it, I would recommend using odorless mineral spirits such as Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits or Crown Low Odor Mineral Spirits. Even though these mineral spirits are odorless, they should still be used with caution in a well-ventilated area.

The mixture combines oil, paint thinner and... I have not yet used this turpenoid with other media, but I am sure it would work just as well as other, more irritating turps. I find the scent more pleasant than Gamsol and it is less irritating to my eyes and nose. I'd still recommend using it with proper ventilation, particularly if you are very sensitive to fumes, just to play it safe.
